After covering the essentials for starting with houseplants, let’s dive into some nice-to-have items that can elevate your plant care game. These aren’t strictly necessary but can make a significant difference in how healthy your plants stay and how much time you spend on plant care.

Clear Pots

Clear pots are fantastic for monitoring root growth and health, especially when you’re transferring new plants or during propagation. Seeing the roots can help you judge when it’s time to repot or if there are any problems to address.

Lighting

Lighting is an important consideration. Not all homes have optimal natural lighting. I supplement the lighting in my plant areas for this reason. I use a clip lamp, a grow bulb in a lamp on my desk, a grow bulb in my ceiling over my hanging plants, and bar lights in my indoor greenhouses. Almost none of my plants would get the light they need without the bulbs I have.

Timers

If you’re using artificial lights, timers are a lifesaver. They ensure your plants get consistent light exposure, which is crucial for healthy growth. I love having my lights on timers because if I didn’t, none of my plants would get enough light. These timers are bluetooth enabled and have wifi capability. I use a low-tech timer for some of my lamps as well.

Repotting Tools

This tool set is a cost effective collection of a few things to make life easier. These are especially nice to have for propagation and repotting, making these tasks much less messy.

Humidity Control

Many houseplants thrive with higher humidity. If your space is small, simple solutions like misting or a small humidifier. Misting is an easy and quick way to increase moisture around your plants, but must be done frequently if it your plant is an open area. Small humidifiers can create a microclimate of humidity that’s beneficial for your plants, with the added benefit of being more hands off. This one has an intermittent setting which allows it to run for a surprisingly long time before needing to be refilled.

Temperature Control

Temperature fluctuations can stress plants out, some more than others. A thermometer-hygrometer combo allows you to keep an eye on both temperature and humidity, and is also bluetooth enabled. I have several around my plant areas which help me monitor when to mist or move in my humidifier.

These extras help streamline houseplant care, making care a breeze and allowing for more enjoyment of your plants with less hassle. Stay tuned for Part 3, where I’ll share detailed care tips to help you keep your plants happy and healthy.
